Arenal Volcano National Park

One of the most interesting characteristics of Arenal volcano is that one half of the volcano appears charred, black and barren while the other is layered in thick, primary rainforest. During the 1968 eruption, lava and molten rock demolished the western half of the volcano leaving behind ash-covered ground, igneous rock and giant craters from volcanic debris.

Howler and spider monkeys, white-nosed coatis, sloths, deer, boa constrictors, parrots, parakeets, black vultures, quetzals, trogons, hummingbirds, and motmots are part of the fauna found on this National Park. Plenty of interesting ferns, heliconia, match trees, brave cane and hardwoods dot the landscape as well.

Laguna del Arenal is Costa Rica's largest inland body of water. The lake seizes 48 square miles and occupies a depression that forms a gap between the Cordillera de Guanacaste and Cordillera de Tilarán. Although the depression dates back about two million years, the lake was created by engineers in 1973. Fishing trips and wind surfing are some activities you may enjoy.
